The mobile surgical simulator.
Simulation in orthopaedic training is a growing area and can take many forms, the Touch Surgery application now provides trainees with a free mobile surgical simulator. An interactive platform and highly realistic 3D graphics offer an alternative medium to traditional textbooks and diagrams for learning, rehearsing and preparing for surgical procedures.
Touch Surgery uses Cognitive Task Simulation as the basis for teaching procedural steps and operative decision making. Each module covers an individual procedure with learn and test functions, as well as feedback on your performance and learning curve.
Currently the selection of orthopaedic modules available is limited to:
- Dynamic Hip Screw
- Emergency Leg Fasciotomies
- Carpal Tunnel Release
- Posterior Approach to the Hip
- Lateral Approach to the Hip
- Anterior Approach to the Forearm
- Anterior Approach to the Shoulder
- Simple Trochanteric Wiring
This, combined with the limitations of simulation, means the application is most suitable for Core Surgical Trainees and Specialty Registrars in their first few years of training. However, more modules are planned to expand the application’s coverage of index procedures which will broaden its relevance to more experienced trainees.
The application and modules are free to download and once downloaded to your account, they are available for use ‘offline’ thus allowing access wherever and whenever you are operating. Orthopaedic trainees looking to supplement their technical skills training should consider this application and trainers could use it as a framework for Procedural Based Assessments. Highly recommended.
