Cyril Mauffrey & David J Hak. pp.1104. Springer 2015. ISBN-13: 978-2817804743
Summarises the required knowledge for the FRCS Orthopaedic exam in a bullet point format. Editors David Hak and Cyril Mauffrey are based in Denver, Colorado, but Dr Mauffrey trained in England and is in touch with British trainees’ needs. Senior consultants have authored the relevant chapters. The book encompasses the curriculum requirements of the UK, US, Canadian and Australasian examinations.
Chapters cover surgical anatomy, basic sciences, adult reconstruction, paediatric orthopaedics, foot and ankle surgery, orthopaedic pathology, the spine, sports surgery, upper limb, wrist and hand surgery, and orthopaedic trauma. There are clear ‘take-home message’ boxes in each chapter highlighting important concepts. The bibliography in each chapter, with references from recent literature and textbooks, is extremely useful. The trauma section is nicely laid out with classifications and management options.
Compared with Miller’s Review of Orthopaedics, this book has 20% more pages for about four times the price. This (apart from the missing ‘a’ in the title) may be the only hindrance to a UK trainee purchasing a copy. The book is well formatted, clear, succinct and an easy read in comparison with other revision aids. Passport for the Orthopedic Boards and FRCS Examination would undeniably be extremely useful as a revision tool for the exit exams!
