Mr Neil Michael Orpen is a UK based spinal surgeon and focuses education, clinical and research activities on spinal surgery and in particular minimally invasive techniques for treating spinal surgical conditions.
He graduated from Stellenbosch Medical School in South Africa in 1996 and completed junior doctor training in Namibia before moving to the UK to start surgical membership and then orthopaedic fellowship training in Oxford. After spinal fellowship training in Bristol and Reading in the UK he was appointed a Consultant in 2009.
During this time he has written a number of book chapters and educational training material for junior and senior levels of medical and surgical training with published articles in various peer review journals including in the JBJS (Br) on minimally invasive spinal surgical techniques. He now concentrates lecturing on minimally invasive fusion techniques in the lumbar spine.
He is a regular reviewer for The Bone & Joint Journal (previously The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (Br)). His clinical and surgical practise concentrates on adult degenerative spinal conditions and the use of disc replacement surgery, cement augmentation techniques and minimally invasive decompression and fusion techniques in the lumbar spine.
Neil Orpen is a Clinical Lead for the Bone & Joint Spine specialty, and recently authored Chronic back pain – lost in translation again so apples may be compared with pears, but we cannot be sure.
