In its own words: Combining scholarly essays with visual narratives and a conclusion in comics form, establishes graphic medicine as a new area of scholarship. Demonstrates that graphic medicine narratives offer patients, family members, and medical caregivers new ways to negotiate the challenges of the medical experience. Discusses comics as visual rhetoric.
In my words: A serious academic tome in words and pictures. The pictures are more fun, but the words are carefully considered. I recommend www.graphicmedicine.org for the uninitiated, but for those who are open to the possibility that comics (graphic medicine) may have a serious place in medicine, and perhaps have an academic interest, this is a source of academic inspiration.
